Custom Software or Off-the-Shelf? A Practical Test
Buying is faster and cheaper — until the day your business has to work the way the software wants. Four questions that settle the decision.

There is no universally right answer, only a right answer for a specific process. These four questions usually settle it in one meeting.
1. Is this process how you win?
If a process is the reason customers choose you, shaping it around a generic product slowly erases your advantage. Build what differentiates you; buy what everyone does the same way — accounting, email, payroll.
2. How much will you change the product?
Heavy customisation of a ready-made system often costs more than building, and every upgrade becomes a risk. If you are rewriting more than a third of it, you are already building — just with someone else's constraints.
3. Who owns the data and the integrations?
- Can you export everything, in a usable format, whenever you want?
- Does it support Arabic and right-to-left properly, not as an afterthought?
- Can it connect to ZATCA e-invoicing and your existing systems?
- Where is the data hosted, and does that satisfy your compliance obligations?
4. What is the five-year cost?
Compare licences per user for five years, plus customisation and integration, against a one-time build plus maintenance. For teams above roughly fifty users, custom often wins on cost alone — and always wins on fit.
Buy the commodity. Build the advantage. Integrate both properly.
